Spring Cleaning Tips for Seniors

Now that the snow has melted and days are getting longer, we’re getting a glimpse of the spring season that’s right around the corner. With warm afternoons, blooming flowers and sunshine tempting us to head outdoors, it’s important not to forget some essential tips for the inside of your home. So before you make the screened porch or patio your go-to place to spend the upcoming season, give some time and attention to certain areas inside your home.
For many seniors, the idea of spring cleaning can be overwhelming. Start with a list and prioritize items based on your environment and unique needs. Here are some tips…

  • Clean commonly used kitchen appliances like the refrigerator, microwave and stove.
  • Wipe out drawers and cabinet shelving.
  • Throw out old food and medications.
  • Clean surfaces that collect dust like ceiling fans, lighting fixtures, lamp shades, photographs and window treatments.
  • Dust and sanitize all furniture.
  • Wash all bedding.
  • Wash all flooring.
  • If you intend on opening windows this spring season, wipe clean the area between the window and screen of all dirt, dust and insects that collected over the winter.
  • Replace lighting in fixtures that are out or beginning to dim.
  • Check batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Spring cleaning is also about de-cluttering, organizing and downsizing. Here are some tips to sorting through the clutter…
  • Get rid of or relocate furniture or other items that restrict clear walkways through the home.
  • Go through mail, newspapers, magazines and other stacks of paper. Make piles of what to keep, recycle or shred.
  • Check closets or less frequently used rooms for items that could be donated to charity or given to family or friends.
  • Designate an area to store items you must keep.
Before you start dreading spring cleaning, keep in mind the many benefits. For seniors, spring cleaning is a great way to let go of the winter blues and reflect on the season. It carries not only emotional advantages, but physical as well. Spring cleaning can reduce the chance of respiratory illness and decrease the risk of accidental falls.
