5 Essential Winter Safety Tips for Seniors

The winter months present a unique set of challenges for seniors, and they need to take added precautions in order to provide for their health and safety during a season that brings cooler temperatures, and the joy of the holiday season.

1. Stay warm – even if you don’t live in an extremely cold climate, cooler temperatures can have a bearing upon senior health and comfort. Wet clothes should be changed out of promptly to prevent a chill

2. Consider getting a flu shot – to help protect from the winter flu season, it’s recommended that all seniors get a seasonal flu shot. Although they’re not in the high risk group for H1N1, seniors should consider receiving these vaccines as well

3. Understand side effects of medications – some medications can cause changes in the circulatory system and can replicate symptoms of colds. Seniors should understand the potential side effects of their medications, and talk to their doctors about alternatives

4. Stick to cold drinks – although hot drinks warm the body on a winter day, they can actually deceive the body which changes temperature regulation. Cool drinks to stay hydrated are better for health

5. Check home technology – smoke detectors and C02 detectors are even more essential during the winter months. Seniors should also ensure safe use of space heaters and other appliances
